According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) report, in 2022 Indonesia's sex ratio reached 102.2. This means that for every 100 women, there are approximately 102 men.
A sex ratio of 100 represents a balance between the number of men and women.
A ratio above 100 indicates that men are in the majority, while a ratio below 100 means there are more women.
In 2022, 30 Indonesian provinces had a sex ratio above 100.
Papua had the highest ratio, at 113.5. This means that for every 100 women, there were 113 men, the highest among all provinces.
Only one province had a sex ratio of exactly 100, namely East Nusa Tenggara.
Then there were 3 provinces with a ratio below 100, namely Yogyakarta Special Region, East Java, and South Sulawesi.
Yogyakarta Special Region had the lowest ratio, at 98. This means that for every 100 women, there were only 98 men.
"Data on the sex ratio is useful for developing gender-sensitive development planning, especially regarding fair and balanced development for men and women," said the BPS on its official website.
"Information on the sex ratio is also important for politicians, especially to increase women's representation in parliament," said the BPS.
