The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 603 natural disasters in Indonesia between January 1 and March 14, 2023. This is an increase from the 564 disasters recorded on March 8, 2023.
Floods were the most frequent disaster, accounting for 257 incidents. Extreme weather events were second, with 190 incidents.
Third were landslides with 103 incidents. Forest and land fires (karhutla) were fourth, with 33 incidents.
Fifth and sixth were high tides and earthquakes, both with 9 incidents each. Volcanic eruptions were seventh, with 2 incidents.
This series of natural disasters resulted in 93 deaths, 100 injuries, and 10 missing persons. A total of 1,553,575 people were also reported to be suffering and displaced.
These numbers are likely to increase, as government and authorities are still conducting evacuations in several disaster-affected areas.
Ongoing natural disasters include landslides in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, which have caused numerous casualties. As of March 14, 2023, this included 50 deaths, 4 missing persons, and 2,835 displaced people.
Landslides also occurred in Way Kanan, Lampung. As of March 13, 2023, at least 2 people died and 3 remain missing.
