COVID-19 statistics in the Americas this week still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 20 countries recorded an increase in deaths, and two other countries recorded deaths, albeit in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Ecuador, Costa Rica, Bermuda, Paraguay, and Panama. The total deaths in these five countries as of January 30, 2022, amounted to 624, with a weekly growth exceeding 68.25 percent.
Ecuador ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 127.94 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 155 deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported 68 deaths.
Costa Rica follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 115.79 percent. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 82, while the previous week recorded 38 deaths.
Rounding out the top five are Bermuda with four deaths (up 100%), Paraguay with a 96.45% increase in deaths, and Panama with 106 deaths (up 68.25%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 16,290 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 20.95% compared to the previous week. Following with the highest numbers is Brazil with 3,301 deaths (up 67.39%), Mexico with 2,413 deaths (up 49.5%), Colombia with 1,736 deaths (up 49.27%), and Argentina with 1,688 deaths (up 51.53%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 28,929. This accounts for 46.43 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 62,303 deaths. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 21,975 deaths.
