The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus is spreading globally, reaching 475,660 cases by Monday, January 24, 2022. North Korea ranks first, with a weekly increase in Omicron cases growing by 755.88 percent. GISAID recorded 582 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 79.08 percent compared to the previous day.
Vietnam follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in this country grew by 637.5 percent. The number of new Omicron cases reported was 59. Daily statistics show a 96.67 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 30 cases.
Next is Sri Lanka with 212 additional Omicron cases (up 307.69%), Poland with 2,233 additional Omicron cases (up 265.47%), and Portugal with a 153.06 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 1,569 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 1,406, a 12.03 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
