This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Seven countries recorded increased deaths this week, while six others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Honduras, Brazil, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States. The total deaths in these five countries for the week of October 9th, 2022, amounted to 3,031, representing a weekly growth of over 28.44 percent.
Honduras ranked first, with a 200 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded three deaths in the country, compared to one the previous week.
Brazil followed in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in the country increased by 189.23 percent. The number of deaths reported was 752, compared to 260 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five were Argentina with 10 deaths (up 66.67%), Trinidad and Tobago with 17 deaths (up 41.67%), and the United States with a 28.44% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas occurred in the United States, with 2,249 deaths. This represents a 28.44% increase compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 752 deaths (up 189.23%), Chile 136 deaths (up 3.03%), Peru 125 deaths (up 22.55%), and Mexico 38 deaths (down 44.12%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 3,379. This accounts for 38.36 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 8,809. The death toll in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 2,417 deaths.
