According to Credit Suisse estimates, at the end of 2021, the global wealth of the entire world's population reached US$463.6 trillion. This figure represents a 9.8% increase compared to the end of 2020, marking the highest level in the last two decades.
"The growth of global population wealth remained robust in 2020, despite economic disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The recovery in 2021 also created increasingly favorable conditions," stated Credit Suisse in the *Global Wealth Report 2022*.
When broken down by country, the population of high-net-worth individuals is highest in the United States (US).
Credit Suisse estimates that in 2021, approximately 24.5 million people (39.2%) of the US adult population had net worth exceeding US$1 million or more than Rp15 billion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,000/US$).
In China, the number of adults with assets exceeding Rp15 billion reached 6.1 million (9.9%). Although second globally, this population of Chinese millionaires is roughly a quarter of that in the US.
The number of wealthy individuals in other countries is significantly smaller, as shown in the graph. Meanwhile, the number of wealthy Indonesians with assets exceeding Rp15 billion is estimated at only 191,000 (0.3%).
However, the large number of wealthy individuals globally does not necessarily translate to improved societal well-being. Population wealth is also expected to continue growing even if a country experiences a recession.
"The increase in financial assets in 2021 resulted in increased inequality," said Credit Suisse.
"In 2022-2023, the economies of several countries may slow down or even experience recession. However, we expect global population wealth to continue to increase over the next five years," it continued.
Credit Suisse also revealed that the increase in global wealth did not occur evenly between men and women.
"Of the 26 countries with the largest adult populations, between 2020 and 2021, the wealth of women in 15 countries decreased, including in China, Germany, and India," it stated.
