The Indonesian Ministry of Health has examined a total of 12,219 coronavirus (COVID-19) sequences in Indonesia up to January 10, 2022. The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant ranks second with a total of 337 detected sequences.
This new coronavirus variant was most frequently found in Jakarta, with 235 sequences. Furthermore, 66 Omicron variant sequences were found in Banten. The Omicron variant was detected in West Java and East Java with 35 and 1 sequence respectively.
Meanwhile, the most dominant COVID-19 variant remains the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant, with 7,526 sequences. Other COVID-19 variants detected in Indonesia include 81 Alpha (B.1.1.7) variant sequences. This variant, originating from the UK, has spread across 12 provinces domestically. The majority, or 38 sequences of the Alpha variant, are located in Jakarta.
There were also 22 Beta (B.1.351) variant sequences in Indonesia. This variant, originating from South Africa, was found in Jakarta and West Java, with 12 and 10 sequences respectively.
To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the public is urged to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. In addition, the public is encouraged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
