A *Statista Consumer Insights* report predicts a decrease in the number of smokers in most countries worldwide over the next decade. However, Statista reports that the trend in Indonesia shows an increase in the number of smokers during the same period.
Statista recorded 112 million smokers in Indonesia in 2021. This number is projected to increase to 123 million by 2030.
“The world is expected to see a slow shift away from smoking over the coming years, according to analysts from Statista Consumer Insights. Except in Indonesia, which is projected to see millions of additional smokers by 2030,” Statista stated on its website Wednesday (May 31, 2023).
Unlike most other countries, where Statista predicts a decrease of between two and four million smokers between 2021 and 2030.
China has the highest number of smokers according to the Statista report. However, this number is projected to fall from 293 million in 2021 to 290 million in 2030.
Similarly, the number of smokers in India is predicted to decrease from 147 million to 145 million during the same period. Below Indonesia, the United States is projected to see a decrease in smokers from 67 million to 63 million by the end of 2030.
Several other countries, such as Russia, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom, are also predicted to experience a decrease in the number of smokers over the next decade. Meanwhile, France is expected to have a relatively stable number of smokers in 2021 and 2030, as shown in the graph above.
“According to the World Health Organization, more than 80% of the world’s 1.3 billion tobacco users live in low- and middle-income countries. Tobacco use kills more than 8 million people per year, including 1.2 million deaths from exposure to second-hand smoke,” Statista stated.
