This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Fifteen countries recorded increased deaths this week, while eight others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Lebanon, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, and Azerbaijan. A total of 25 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Wednesday, December 21, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 60 percent.
Lebanon ranks first, with a 100 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded two deaths in the country, a 100 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Bahrain follows, recording a 100 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 33.33% decrease in deaths compared to the previous day. Sri Lanka saw a 66.67% increase in deaths, Cyprus a 60% increase, and Azerbaijan recorded eight deaths (a 60% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Japan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 1,687 deaths—a 17.56% increase compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea recorded 362 deaths (an 8.06% increase), Hong Kong 222 deaths (a 24.02% increase), Taiwan 209 deaths (a 4.5% increase), and the Philippines 206 deaths (a 36.42% increase).
A total of 3,133 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 31.75 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, which totaled 9,868. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 2,786 deaths.
