According to a survey by the Indonesian Geriatric Medical Association (PERGEMI), 24.6% of the elderly population in Indonesia have a history of chronic illness.
Of this group of elderly individuals with such history, the majority, or 37.8%, have hypertension. Then, 22.9% have diabetes, 11.9% have rheumatic diseases, and 11.4% have heart disease.
Other illnesses reported among the elderly include asthma (10.4%), acid reflux (8%), gout (5.5%), chronic lung disease (3%), high cholesterol (3%), and kidney disease (2%).
This survey also revealed the number of medications consumed by the elderly. All elderly respondents consumed an average of 1.4 pills per day.
Healthy elderly individuals consumed 1 pill per day, while those with chronic illnesses consumed 2.7 pills per day.
PERGEMI released this *Elderly Welfare Survey* in commemoration of National Elderly Day (HLUN) on May 29, 2022.
The survey was conducted from May 9-22, 2022, involving 816 respondents spread across 34 Indonesian provinces. 57.2% of respondents were women and 42.8% were men.
Respondents were divided into five age categories: 60-65 years (64.2%), 66-70 years (20.1%), 71-75 years (9.6%), 76-80 years (3.7%), and >80 years (2.5%).
