Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia received 11.67 million visits from foreign tourists in 2023.
According to the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, this figure is almost double or a 98.2% increase compared to 2022 (year-on-year/yoy).
"The number of foreign tourist visits is still lower than the total visits before the pandemic, where in 2019 the total number of foreign tourist visits reached 16.11 million," said Amalia in a press conference on Thursday (1/2/2024).
When viewed by nationality, foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in 2023 were dominated by Malaysians.
Malaysia contributed 1.9 million visits or 16.3% of the total foreign tourist visits last year.
Tourists from Australia were in second place with 1.43 million visits (12.3%), and Singapore in third place with 1.41 million visits (12.1%).
Here is a list of the top 10 countries of origin for foreign tourists with the most visits to Indonesia throughout 2023:
1. Malaysia: 1.9 million visits
2. Australia: 1.43 million visits
3. Singapore: 1.41 million visits
4. China: 787,900 visits
5. Timor Leste: 728,600 visits
6. India: 606,400 visits
7. United States: 392,300 visits
8. South Korea: 347,200 visits
9. United Kingdom: 335,200 visits
10. France: 273,700 visits
BPS also noted that most foreign tourists entered through I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, namely 5.24 million foreign tourists or 44.94% of the total foreign tourist visits in 2023.
"The average length of stay for foreign tourists is 8.5 nights," said Amalia.
