The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 7.03 million cases by Friday, May 19, 2023. Paraguay recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 25.2 percent. GISAID recorded 2,002 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 5.87 percent compared to the previous day.
Next is Palestine, which recorded a 15.25 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 15.25 percent compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Jamaica increased by 14.0625 percent to 2,774 cases compared to the previous week, Algeria with 536 additional Omicron cases (up 9.16%), and the Republic of the Congo with 209 additional Omicron cases (up 6.63%).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 37,005, a 1.35 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
