The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.43 million cases by Saturday, August 20, 2022. According to GISAID data, the United States has recorded the highest number of Omicron cases, at 1.56 million. This represents 35.25 percent of the total global Omicron cases.
The United Kingdom follows, with a weekly growth rate of Omicron cases reaching 0.44 percent. Daily data shows a 0.06 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, totaling 1.28 million.
Next is Denmark with 276,520 Omicron cases (a 1.62% increase), France with 257,150 cases (a 12.05% increase), and Japan with a 3.89 percent increase to 174,840 cases compared to the previous week.
In Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases has reached 18,943, a 0.15 percent increase from the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
