Four Million Indonesians Engage in Online Gambling, Ranging from Children to the Elderly

According to Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Hadi Tjahjanto's report, approximately 4 million people in Indonesia have been detected engaging in online gambling.

The age range of these online gamblers varies, from children to the elderly.

"Based on the demographic data of online gamblers, 2%, or a total of 80,000 individuals under the age of 10, have been detected," Hadi stated in a press conference on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Those aged 10-20 years account for 11% (440,000 individuals), 21-30 years for 13% (520,000 individuals), 31-50 years for 40% (1.64 million individuals), and those over 50 years for 34% (1.35 million individuals).

“[Online gambling perpetrators] are predominantly from the lower-middle class, accounting for 80% of the total players," Hadi said.

Hadi revealed that the transaction amounts for online gambling in the lower-middle class range from Rp10,000 to Rp100,000.

In the upper-middle class, transactions range from Rp100,000 to Rp40 billion.

According to a report from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), authorities have blocked approximately 5,000 accounts suspected of being linked to online gambling.
