This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Nine countries still recorded an increase in deaths this week, while nine others saw a decrease.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda, Costa Rica, French Guiana, and Paraguay. A total of 90 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Monday, August 1, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 34.78 percent.
Trinidad and Tobago had the highest weekly increase in deaths, at 125 percent. Worldometer recorded nine deaths in the country, up from four the previous week.
Bermuda followed in second place, with a 100 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Two deaths were reported, compared to one the previous week.
Rounding out the top five were Costa Rica with 14 deaths (up 75%), French Guiana with three deaths (up 50%), and Paraguay with a 34.78% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was in the United States, with 2,022 deaths. This represents a 5.04% increase compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil reported 1,558 deaths (down 3.41%), Mexico 636 deaths (up 9.28%), Chile 249 deaths (up 1.22%), and Peru 197 deaths (down 2.96%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 5,062. This accounts for 36.7 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 13,793. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 5,029.
