The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.02 million cases by Monday, August 15, 2022. The United States ranks first, with weekly Omicron cases growing by 2.71 percent. GISAID recorded 1.52 million Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases increased by 0.05 percent compared to the previous day.
The United Kingdom follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the number of Omicron cases in the UK grew by 0.7 percent. Daily figures show a 0.02 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, totaling 1.27 million.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Australia increased by 2.36 percent to 84,097 compared to the previous week; Austria recorded 81,341 cases (a 10.19 percent increase); and South Africa saw a 2.16 percent increase, reaching 18,484 cases compared to the previous week.
In Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 18,301, a 0.53 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
