This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to a continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 11 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while five others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Argentina, Suriname, Colombia, and Panama. The total deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, July 23, 2022, amounted to 285, with a weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Honduras ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 1,700 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 18 deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported single death.
Argentina follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 140 percent. The number of deaths reported in this country was 24, compared to 10 in the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, deaths in Suriname increased by 100%, deaths in Colombia increased by 70%, and deaths in Panama increased by 50%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 2,070 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 2.58% compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil reported 1,705 deaths (down 2.29%), Mexico recorded 503 deaths (up 40.11%), Chile recorded 261 deaths (up 12.02%), and Colombia recorded 238 deaths (up 70%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 5,249. This accounts for 41.38 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 12,685. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 4,967.
