Tens of millions of Indonesians are estimated to still suffer from malnutrition.
This is recorded in the latest report, *The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World*, released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Wednesday (6/7/2022).
According to the FAO, undernourishment is a condition where a person's daily food consumption does not meet the standard energy requirements for a healthy life.
The FAO noted that in 2021, the number of undernourished people worldwide reached approximately 767 million. Of that number, the majority, or 425 million, were in Asia.
Indonesia itself is recorded as the country with the highest number of undernourished people in Southeast Asia.
However, in terms of percentage, the Southeast Asian country with the highest prevalence of undernourishment is Timor Leste, while Indonesia is ranked third in 2021.
Here is an estimate of the average number of undernourished people in Southeast Asia during the 2019-2021 period according to the FAO, along with their percentage of the national population:
* Indonesia: 17.7 million people (6.5% of the national population)
* Thailand: 6.2 million people (8.8% of the national population)
* Philippines: 5.7 million people (5.2% of the national population)
* Vietnam: 5.6 million people (5.7% of the national population)
* Myanmar: 1.7 million people (3.1% of the national population)
* Cambodia: 1 million people (6.3% of the national population)
* Laos: 400,000 people (5.1% of the national population)
* Timor Leste: 300,000 people (26.2% of the national population)
* Malaysia: number not reported because the prevalence of undernourished citizens is <2.5% of the national population
* Singapore: data not available
* Brunei: data not available
The FAO also notes that the number of undernourished people globally has continued to increase over the past five years.
"Despite expectations that the world would recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and food security would improve, global hunger has actually continued to increase until 2021," wrote the FAO in its report.
"This issue shows that national policies are no longer contributing to reducing hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition," it continued.
In response to this problem, the FAO encourages countries to improve policies in the agricultural sector so that healthy food can be accessed by low-income groups.
"This is a moment for governments to evaluate their food and agricultural policies," it concluded.
