Based on PATH data, Indonesia required 1,990,609 cubic meters (m3) of oxygen per day solely for Covid-19 patients until Wednesday, July 28, 2021. This was the highest oxygen demand among other lower- and middle-income countries.
Brazil and India also had daily oxygen needs exceeding 1.5 million m3. Brazil required 1,979,658 m3, while India's need was slightly lower at 1,742,686 m3.
The surge in Covid-19 cases led to oxygen shortages in Indonesia due to increased demand. This situation prompted several countries to assist in meeting domestic oxygen needs. One example is the oxygen aid for Covid-19 patients from Switzerland.
Switzerland sent 600 oxygen concentrators to Jakarta on July 24, 2021. This was their sixth shipment of medical supplies to several countries since May. Switzerland also provided over 12,000 medical protective suits and more than 45,000 masks, as cited by Antara.
The Ministry of Health recorded a total of 3,287,727 Covid-19 cases in Indonesia. 558,392 of these were active cases, with an additional 47,791 cases reported on July 28, 2021.
The government continues to urge the public to practice the 3M's to curb the spread of the coronavirus: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. Avoiding crowds and reducing mobility also contribute to reducing Covid-19 transmission.
PATH estimates daily oxygen needs for each lower- and middle-income country based on reported Covid-19 cases. These figures do not reflect the oxygen needs of non-Covid-19 patients.
