This week's COVID-19 statistics in Europe show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, 13 countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 16 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Sweden, Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova, the Netherlands, and Montenegro. The total number of deaths in these five countries as of Monday, August 22, 2022, was 80, with weekly growth exceeding 75 percent.
Sweden ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths of 1,000 percent. Worldometer recorded 11 deaths in the country, up from just one the previous week.
Next is Lithuania, which recorded 166.67 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. However, daily death data shows a 4% decrease compared to the previous day. The Republic of Moldova recorded 10 deaths (up 100%), the Netherlands saw an 86.67% increase in deaths, and Montenegro recorded seven deaths (up 75%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Germany had the highest number of deaths in the past seven days in Europe, with 806 deaths. Death reports in the country decreased by 4.05% compared to the previous week. Following Germany, Italy recorded 677 deaths (down 26.73%), the United Kingdom 532 deaths (up 19.82%), France 437 deaths (down 5.41%), and Russia 425 deaths (up 10.68%).
Total deaths in Europe over the past seven days were 4,371. This accounts for 31.17 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 14,024. The number of deaths in Europe decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 4,624 deaths.
