This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Seven countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while nine others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Guyana, Ecuador, Guatemala, Suriname, and Chile. A total of 315 deaths were reported in these five countries as of Tuesday, June 21, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 32.2 percent.
Guyana had the highest weekly increase in deaths, at 300 percent. Worldometer recorded eight deaths in the country, compared to two the previous week.
Ecuador followed with a 240 percent weekly increase in deaths. The country reported 34 deaths, compared to 10 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Guatemala saw a 65.22% increase in deaths, Suriname a 50% increase, and Chile 156 deaths (a 32.2% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas was in the United States, with 1,469 deaths. This represents a 0.34% increase compared to the previous week. Brazil reported 932 deaths (down 17.08%), Mexico 212 deaths (up 19.77%), Canada 204 deaths (down 22.43%), and Chile 156 deaths (up 32.2%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 3,270. This accounts for 42.04 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 7,778. The number of deaths in the Americas is down from the previous seven-day total of 3,437.
