The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.98 million cases by Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Greece ranks first, with a 14.94 percent weekly increase in Omicron cases. GISAID recorded 8,761 new Omicron cases in the country, representing a 14.94 percent daily increase.
Russia follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases increased by 13.72 percent. Daily figures show a 2.23 percent increase compared to the previous day, with 14,111 new cases recorded.
Furthermore, Japan saw a 5.18 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 234,890 cases compared to the previous week. Bonaire reported a 4.24 percent increase, totaling 835 cases, while Panama recorded 2,333 new Omicron cases (a 3.92 percent increase).
In Indonesia, 23,300 new Omicron cases were recorded, representing a 0.73 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
