The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reported that cases of the mysterious acute kidney injury (AKI) reached 245 cases spread across 23 provinces as of Sunday (23/10/2022).
Based on age group, the largest number of cases of acute kidney injury in children was experienced by infants under 5 years old (toddlers). Specifically, there were 25 cases among infants aged 0-1 years and 161 cases among children aged 1-5 years. This accounts for 75% of the total national cases.
There were also 35 cases of acute kidney injury among children aged 6-10 years and 24 cases among children aged 11-18 years.
Meanwhile, the number of deaths due to this mysterious acute kidney injury reached 141 children, or 57% of the total cases.
In response to the outbreak of acute kidney failure cases, Kemenkes has imported the antidote Fomepizole, which has high efficacy compared to similar drugs.
The current suspicion is that children experiencing this mysterious acute kidney injury are suffering from intoxication due to ethylene glycol (EG) contamination found in syrup medicines.
