The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.76 million cases by Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Senegal recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 48.97 percent. GISAID recorded 1,442 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 7.37 percent compared to the previous day.
Following Senegal is Egypt, with weekly Omicron case growth reaching 26.67 percent. The country reported 589 new Omicron cases. Daily statistics show an 8.87 percent increase in new Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 541 cases.
Next, new Omicron cases in Ukraine increased by 25.99 percent to 286 cases compared to the previous week; in Gambia, they increased by 17.87 percent to 277 cases; and in Mauritius, they increased by 15.03 percent to 2,664 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 19,585, a 1.93 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
