Data from Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the life expectancy of Indonesian women has been higher than that of men for the past four years.
In 2023, the life expectancy for Indonesian women was recorded at 76.37 years. This is higher than that of men, which was 71.61 years in the same year.
Despite this, the life expectancy for both men and women in 2023 was higher than in 2022. Specifically, it was 71.46 years for men and 76.05 years for women.
Life expectancy in 2022 was also higher than in 2020 and 2021, as shown in the attached graph. Life expectancy has increased every year for the past four years.
Overall, the life expectancy of the Indonesian population was 73.93 years in 2023. Jakarta became the province with the highest life expectancy, with 78.75 years for women and 73.01 years for men.

According to the UN's World Population Prospects: The 2022 Revision, the median life expectancy at birth in Indonesia in 1960 was 46.45 years. This figure has steadily improved until 2023.
However, compared to other Southeast Asian countries, this figure is relatively low. The UN recorded a very high median life expectancy at birth in Singapore in 2022, reaching 84.13 years.
