This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Ten countries recorded increased deaths this week, while five others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Paraguay, and Mexico. A total of 227 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Saturday, December 24, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 19.74 percent.
Argentina recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 457.14 percent. Worldometer recorded 39 deaths in the country, a significant increase compared to the seven deaths reported the previous week.
Trinidad and Tobago follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 100 percent, with six deaths reported this week compared to three the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Colombia saw a 50.94% increase in deaths, Paraguay a 22.22% increase, and Mexico 91 deaths (a 19.74% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 2,215 deaths. This represents a 7.84% increase compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 1,078 deaths (up 14.8%), Peru 177 deaths (up 12.03%), Chile 166 deaths (up 19.42%), and Canada 125 deaths (down 5.3%).
A total of 4,019 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 35.31 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 11,383. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,613 deaths.
