The Reuters Institute explains that several sources are cited or highlighted as the most prominent news sources for Twitter users.
Twitter is known as the most popular social media platform for obtaining the latest information. This is reflected in the Reuters Institute's *Digital News Report 2021*, which found that a quarter (25%) of Twitter news users stated that the platform is their go-to source for the latest news.
"In comparison, only 13% of Facebook users said the same," wrote the Reuters Institute.
In the *Digital News Report 2022*, mainstream media and journalists were the most popular news sources for X (formerly Twitter) users, accounting for 55% of all Twitter respondents.
Not only mainstream media, but alternative media and their journalists were also chosen by Twitter users as preferred news sources, at 39%.
Politicians and political activists were chosen by 43%, while social media content creators were chosen by 31%.
Ordinary citizens were chosen by 34%, followed by celebrities at 27%.
The Reuters Institute notes that older Twitter users tend to pay more attention to mainstream news brands and politicians when discussing issues on the platform.
"Younger users (under 35) also say they pay the most attention to these sources, but they are also far more likely to pay attention to celebrities and social media personalities for news content than those over 35," the Reuters Institute wrote in its report published Wednesday, October 25, 2023.
The Twitter respondents surveyed totaled 5,852. However, the *Digital News Report 2023* generally surveyed over 93,000 digital news users in 46 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
