The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) predicts that 193.6 million people will travel to their hometowns during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr homecoming period ("mudik").
This number represents 71.7% of Indonesia's total population.
"This figure is an increase compared to the potential movement of people during the 2023 Eid al-Fitr period, which was 123.8 million people," said Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi in a press release on Tuesday (12/3/2024).
Kemenhub estimates that the most significant number of homecoming travelers this year will head to Central Java, with 61.6 million people, or 31.6% of the national total.
Next, an estimated 37.6 million people (19.4%) are expected to travel to East Java, and 32.1 million people (16.6%) to West Java.
Kemenhub also predicts that the majority of homecoming travelers will depart from East Java, with 31.3 million people (16.2%), followed by Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta) with 28.43 million people (14.7%), and Central Java with 26.11 million people (13.5%).
Kemenhub made this prediction based on a survey involving the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), academics, and transportation practitioners.
