This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Eight countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while eight others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay, Honduras, and Canada. A total of 336 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Monday, August 22, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 19.29 percent.
Costa Rica recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 100 percent. Worldometer recorded four deaths in the country, a 50 percent increase from the previous day.
Next is Trinidad and Tobago, which recorded a 90.91 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 5 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous day. Paraguay saw a 35.42 percent increase in deaths, Honduras recorded 11 deaths (a 22.22 percent increase), and Canada saw a 19.29 percent increase.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was in the United States, with 1,970 deaths. This represents an 11.26 percent decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 1,037 deaths (a 30.82 percent decrease), Peru 361 deaths (a 13.17 percent increase), Mexico 357 deaths (a 14.59 percent decrease), and Canada 235 deaths (a 19.29 percent increase).
A total of 4,542 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 33.55 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 13,539. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 5,273 deaths.
