This week's Covid-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to a continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 11 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while eight others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Colombia, Guyana, Mexico, Ecuador, and Guatemala. The total deaths in these five countries as of Friday, June 17, 2022, amounted to 358, with a weekly growth exceeding 62.12 percent.
Colombia ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 2,300 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 24 deaths, a 380 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Guyana follows with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 150 percent. The number of deaths reported in this country was five, compared to two the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Mexico saw a 107.69% increase in deaths, Ecuador a 100% increase, and Guatemala recorded 107 deaths (a 62.12% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,781 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 4.7% compared to the previous week. Following this, Brazil reported 1,043 deaths (up 19.75%), Canada 236 deaths (down 7.81%), Mexico 216 deaths (up 107.69%), and Chile 135 deaths (up 16.38%).
Total deaths in the Americas over the past seven days reached 3,711. This accounts for 43.35 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 8,560. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,323 deaths.
