The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.66 million cases by Tuesday, August 23, 2022. According to GISAID data, Senegal recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 1,343 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Senegal currently represents 0.03 percent of the global total.
Next is Guinea, which recorded a 33.33 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 33.33 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Following this are Egypt with 541 additional Omicron cases (a 16.34% increase), Qatar with 430 additional Omicron cases (a 10.26% increase), and North Korea with an 8.94 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 38,612 compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases increased by 1.43 percent compared to the previous day, reaching 19,214 cases. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
