The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has issued a permit for a second COVID-19 booster vaccination for senior citizens aged over 60 years.
This is stated in Circular Letter Number HK.02.02/C/5565/2022 concerning the Second Booster Dose of COVID-19 Vaccination for the Elderly Group, effective from November 22, 2022.
"This policy is implemented to provide additional protection to vulnerable groups, to reduce the severity, and even death, from COVID-19," said Kemenkes Spokesperson M. Syahril in a press release on the Sehat Negeriku website, Thursday (24/11/2022).
Previously, the second COVID-19 booster vaccine was only permitted for health workers (nakes). This program has been in effect since July 29, 2022.
Based on Kemenkes data, until 12:07 WIB on November 25, 2022, the number of recipients of the second booster vaccine in Indonesia had only reached 742,421 people.
This number is only 3.22% of the COVID-19 vaccination target for health workers and the elderly, which is 23,021,882 people.
Recipients of the second booster vaccine are most numerous in East Java, Central Java, West Java, DKI Jakarta, and North Sumatra.
The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest progress in administering the second booster vaccine until 12:07 WIB on November 25, 2022:
1. East Java: 138,572 doses
2. Central Java: 110,336 doses
3. West Java: 84,331 doses
4. DKI Jakarta: 71,364 doses
5. North Sumatra: 35,003 doses
6. Bali: 32,231 doses
7. Yogyakarta Special Region: 27,042 doses
8. South Sumatra: 21,949 doses
9. Banten: 18,884 doses
10. South Sulawesi: 16,690 doses
Kemenkes Spokesperson M. Syahril emphasized that the acceleration of the second booster vaccination needs to go hand in hand with primary vaccination and the first booster dose. This is because several regions still have primary vaccination coverage below 70%.
"The acceleration of both primary and booster vaccinations needs to be carried out, considering that most of the COVID-19 patients who died were unvaccinated individuals, the elderly, and people with comorbidities," said Syahril.
