Based on data from the Covid-19 report, 3,007 patients died while undergoing treatment or self-isolation at home after being exposed to the coronavirus until August 5, 2021. Of this number, 2,935 people, or 97.6%, who died during self-isolation were in Java.
Thirty-seven coronavirus patients who died during self-isolation were in Sumatra. Furthermore, 16 coronavirus patients died during self-isolation in Kalimantan.
In Bali and Nusa Tenggara, 12 coronavirus patients died during self-isolation. Six coronavirus patients died during self-isolation in Papua and Maluku. Meanwhile, one patient died in Sulawesi.
There are several reasons why coronavirus patients died during self-isolation. Some of these include difficulties in obtaining hospital referrals and self-isolation facilities amidst a surge in coronavirus cases.
Other factors include patients not reporting due to fear of being ostracized and feeling like a social burden in their environment. In addition, they were not monitored by health workers and local residents.
Spokesperson for the Covid-19 Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito, urged several parties not to force themselves to self-isolate when exposed to the coronavirus. Especially when patients experience moderate to severe symptoms, are over 45 years old, have comorbidities, and do not have adequate facilities for self-isolation.
