Research by Worldpanel by Numerator and Europanel shows that producers choose a number of sustainable product features when marketing their goods.

Environmentally friendly packaging was the most chosen, by 64% of total respondents worldwide. According to the research team, this preference is chosen to minimize impact on landfills.

"Features such as 100% recyclable, refill options, plastic-free materials, and the use of recycled materials are commonly preferred and easily accessible choices for consumers," said the research team.

Next, materials were chosen by 60% of brand owners. This includes natural, local, or safer materials for the environment.

The research team added that material composition—such as the use of paper or glass compared to plastic—serves as a direct visual indicator of sustainability, while also conveying an impression of quality and a more premium product positioning.

Following these are options for material sourcing and production processes (46%), sustainability messages or claims (46%), and animal rights and welfare (43%).

Lower choices included carbon neutrality (35%) and B-Corp certification (25%).

Carbon neutrality aims to balance the carbon emissions generated by producers. Meanwhile, B-Corp certification is an effort by companies to meet certain social and environmental standards.

The survey was conducted in 2025, covering 30 countries and 96,000 respondents in America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. The survey's objective was to measure the gap between values declared important by the public and the actions taken by producers or brands.
