Indonesian Protein Consumption Levels in 2024

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the average Indonesian consumed 65.04 grams of protein per capita per day in September 2024.

This intake consisted of 50.32 grams of protein from home-cooked meals and 14.72 grams from processed foods and beverages.

Indonesian protein intake primarily comes from cereals (30%) and fish/shrimp/squid/shellfish (16%)

Broken down by province, the highest protein consumption was in West Nusa Tenggara, averaging 79.6 grams per capita per day.

Meanwhile, the province with the lowest protein consumption was Highland Papua, at 43.27 grams per capita per day.

The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest protein consumption in Indonesia in September 2024:

1. West Nusa Tenggara: 79.6 grams (per capita per day)

2. South Kalimantan: 76.89 grams

3. Riau Islands: 73.14 grams

4. Jakarta: 71.98 grams

5. Banten: 70.55 grams

6. Bangka Belitung Islands: 68.76 grams

7. South Sumatra: 68.7 grams

8. South Papua: 67.37 grams

9. Bali: 67.32 grams

10. North Sumatra: 67.25 grams

According to Health Ministry Regulation Number 28 of 2019, the recommended adequate protein intake for Indonesians ranges from 9 to 75 grams per capita per day, depending on age, gender, weight, and height. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require higher protein intake.

The regulation also states that the average recommended adequate protein intake for the Indonesian population is 57 grams per capita per day.

According to the health service website Alodokter.com, excessive protein consumption can lead to weight gain, kidney damage, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
