Bali Island has the largest coral reef conservation area in Indonesia. According to the 2021 Environmental Statistics, the area of coral reef conservation areas in Bali reaches 977 hectares (ha).

Sulawesi follows as the island with the second largest coral reef conservation area, reaching 163.37 ha. Then, Nusa Tenggara and Papua follow with 44.01 ha and 26.55 ha respectively. Next, Sumatra has a coral reef conservation area of 19.39 ha.

Meanwhile, Java has a coral reef conservation area of 10.53 ha, Kalimantan 3.9 ha, and the smallest coral reef conservation area is in Maluku with an area of 1.43 ha.

For information, according to the Regulation of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Number 24 of 2016 concerning the Procedure for the Rehabilitation of Coastal and Small Island Areas, a conservation area is a part of the coastal and small island areas that have certain characteristics. This becomes a single ecosystem unit that is protected, preserved, and/or sustainably utilized to realize the management of coastal and small island areas.

Coral reefs are one of the protected areas in these conservation areas, including through rehabilitation. Coral reef rehabilitation is carried out through bioresource enrichment, habitat improvement, and environmentally friendly methods.
