West Java: Indonesia's Largest Ornamental Fish Production Center

West Java was Indonesia's largest producer of ornamental fish in 2020. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded ornamental fish production in West Java reaching 683 million fish that year.

East Java ranked second with ornamental fish production of 625.2 million fish. Central Java followed in third place with production of 113.5 million fish.

Ornamental fish production in Yogyakarta was recorded at 18.5 million fish, followed by Jakarta with 15.2 million fish.

Overall, the largest national ornamental fish production centers are located in the provinces of Java Island.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) assesses that the ornamental fish trade in Indonesia has significant potential for further development.

"Collecting ornamental fish has long been a popular hobby in Indonesia. This condition can be used as a promising business opportunity," said the Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP), quoted from the official KKP website, Tuesday (March 8, 2022).

During the pandemic, the hobby of keeping ornamental fish was in high demand because it helped alleviate boredom and reduce stress caused by limited mobility.
