Beyond Rice Cultivation: What Other Uses Does Indonesian Agricultural Land Serve?

Agricultural land offers many benefits beyond rice cultivation. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reports that the total area of farmland used for crops other than rice increased in 2022.

“The proportion of agricultural land used for crops other than rice in 2022 increased compared to the previous year,” wrote the BPS in its report, *Harvested Area and Rice Production in Indonesia 2022*.

The largest proportion of land use was for crops other than rice, at 24.12% of Indonesia's total agricultural land. This is up from 21.49% previously.

Next is fallow land, at 15.02% in 2022. This is down from 15.55% in 2021.

Fallow land is a system of restoring soil fertility by leaving the land uncultivated.

Next is land used for the vegetative stage, at 13.97%. This is down from 14.3% previously.

The vegetative stage is the initial phase of plant reproduction without sexual reproduction or pollination. According to the Ministry of Agriculture's website, this phase typically begins from seed germination to the formation of flower primordia or panicles.

Then, land use for the generative stage followed at 13.96% in 2022. Unfortunately, this is down from 14.45% in 2021.

In contrast to the vegetative stage, the generative stage is plant reproduction through sexual reproduction or pollination.

This data is taken from integrated food crop agricultural statistics using the area sample frame (ASF) method throughout 2022.

In this activity, BPS collaborated with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) & the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN), which is now the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
