The number of agrarian conflicts has been difficult to quell year after year. Fluctuations in these cases are based on unstable national agrarian conditions without any end in sight. As a result of these agrarian conflicts, there are always casualties, whether from shootings, assaults, or arrests.
According to the year-end records of the Agrarian Reform Consortium (KPA), there were 659 agrarian conflicts in 2017. This represents the highest number of cases in the last five years. Meanwhile, the rate of increase in these cases jumped by 78.67% from 2015 to 2016. However, in the last year of recording, 2018, there were 410 conflicts, a decrease compared to the previous year.
In reality, agrarian conflicts are largely triggered by public officials' policies that have a wide-ranging impact on social, economic, and political dimensions. The sector contributing most to agrarian conflicts is the plantation sector. In 2018, 60% of the 144 agrarian conflicts in the plantation sector arose from palm oil commodities. This is due to the practice of plantation development and expansion in Indonesia that violates people's land rights.
