Many countries are currently facing a crisis threat due to rising food and energy commodity prices. This was stated by President Jokowi in his commemoration of World Food Day on October 16, 2022.
"There are various predictions about the future global situation, that many countries in the world face the threat of acute food insecurity for their people. Almost three years of pandemic, followed by the conflict and war in Ukraine, have brought the impacts of economic, energy, and food crises to the entire world," Jokowi wrote on his official Instagram account, Sunday (16/10/2022).
Fortunately, amidst these conditions, Indonesia is expected to still be able to maintain the stability of rice production, as it has for the past five years.
This is because some time ago, Indonesia received an award from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) for having a good food security system and successfully achieving rice self-sufficiency during the 2019-2021 period.
The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) also estimates that national rice production this year will increase by 1.25 million tons of dry milled rice (GKG) or grow by 2.31% compared to last year, so that the total production could reach 55.67 million tons of GKG.
This GKG production can be converted into 32.07 million tons of rice for public consumption until the end of 2022. This rice production also increased by 720,000 tons or grew by 2.29% compared to last year.
Here is a breakdown of Indonesia's estimated rice production throughout 2022 according to BPS:
* January-September 2022: 45.43 million tons GKG
* October-December 2022: 10.24 million tons GKG
* Total (January-December 2022): 55.67 million tons GKG
And here is the estimated rice production converted from GKG for 2022:
* January-September 2022: 26.17 million tons of rice
* October-December 2022: 5.9 million tons of rice
* Total (January-December 2022): 32.07 million tons of rice
The increase in rice production is inseparable from the increase in national rice harvest area of 194,000 hectares or an increase of 1.87% compared to last year, bringing the total to 10.61 million hectares in 2022.
