Researchers from Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) identified 51 new species throughout 2025. The findings include 49 species from Indonesia, one microalga from New Caledonia, and one crustacean from Vietnam.
Head of BRIN’s Research Center for Biosystematics and Evolution (PRBE), Arif Nurkanto, said the discoveries highlight Indonesia’s vast potential for biodiversity.
“Amid an accelerating pace of extinction that is racing against time, scientific discoveries offer hope that natural wealth will not disappear before it is even known,” Arif wrote in a press release on Monday (February 2, 2026).
Most of the newly identified species are endemic, meaning they can only be found in specific locations.
In detail, the discoveries comprise 32 fauna species, 16 flora species, and three microbial species. All of these findings were published in international scientific journals throughout 2025.
