According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the area of land controlled by forestry plant cultivation companies in Indonesia has continued to increase in recent years.
These forestry plant cultivation companies consist of industrial timber plantation (HTI) companies, as well as Perum Perhutani and other companies.
The types of forestry plants generally cultivated are fast-growing species such as acacia and pine. However, on Java Island, the most cultivated plant type is teak.
In 2020, forestry plant cultivation companies controlled 9.44 million hectares (ha) of land in Indonesia.
Subsequently, the area gradually increased, reaching 10.46 million ha in 2024.
Cumulatively, during the 2020-2024 period, the land area controlled by forestry plant cultivation companies increased by 1.02 million ha, or grew by approximately 11%.
BPS explained that the land controlled by these companies originates from both state land and non-state land, which includes company-owned land, leased land, or other land acquired by companies, such as customary land, village land, and community land.
"Most of the land controlled by forestry plant cultivation companies originates from state land," BPS stated in its report.
