Coconut Cultivation Area in Indonesia Decreased During 2014-2024

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the area of coconut cultivations in Indonesia has decreased in recent years.

In 2014, the area was still around 3.6 million hectares (ha). Subsequently, the area gradually shrank, reaching approximately 3.3 million ha in 2024, as shown in the graph.

This cultivation area refers to the total land cultivated for coconuts, including those already producing, not yet producing, and those not producing coconuts.

In 2024, the largest coconut cultivation area was in Riau Province, covering 442.79 thousand ha.

Following that were North Sulawesi with 272.38 thousand ha, East Java 222.8 thousand ha, Central Sulawesi 219.23 thousand ha, and North Maluku 204.51 thousand ha.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman now plans to develop the coconut downstream industry, with a focus on North Maluku.

To achieve this, the Ministry of Agriculture will expand the coconut planting program in North Maluku, from an initial 10 thousand ha to 15 thousand ha.

"We will prepare seeds, equipment, and provide guidance from upstream to downstream. The government wants the people to prosper from their own land," said Amran in a press release on Tuesday (28/10/2025).

"If we only process coconut water, its value could reach thousands of trillions. The world is now shifting, milk is being replaced by coconut milk. Europe and China cannot grow coconuts. Indonesia and the Philippines must lead the world market," he stated.
