Indonesia's Dried Tobacco Leaf Production Reaches Record High in 2024

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's dried tobacco leaf production in 2024 reached its highest level in the last ten years.

In 2024, dried tobacco leaf production amounted to 351,360 tons, a 22.64% increase compared to the 286,510 tons produced in 2023.

Prior to this achievement, Indonesia's dried tobacco leaf production fluctuated between 2015 and 2022, with 2016 recording the lowest production at 126,730 tons.

BPS stated that in 2024, East Java Province ranked first with the highest dried tobacco leaf production at 186,510 tons, followed by West Nusa Tenggara Province with 77,350 tons.

However, dried tobacco leaf production did not meet domestic needs. As a result, in 2024, Indonesia imported a total volume of 167,760 tons of tobacco worth US$911.25 million.

According to BPS, Asia was the main supplier with a volume of 103,350 tons worth US$473.09 million.

This was followed by Africa with 30,730 tons (US$161.30 million), America with 30,230 tons (US$235.82 million), and Europe with 3,450 tons (US$41.05 million).

"The main supplying countries were India, Brazil, and Zimbabwe, which collectively contributed the majority of Indonesia's tobacco imports in 2024," said BPS in its report.
