Indonesia Potentially Faces Milk Production Shortages Until 2026

According to the Ministry of Agriculture's Center for Data and Agricultural Information Systems (Pusdatin Kementan), Indonesia is projected to face a milk deficit until 2026.

This projection is recorded in the report, *Outlook Komoditas Peternakan Susu Tahun 2022* (Dairy Livestock Commodity Outlook 2022).

Pusdatin Kementan estimates that national cow's milk production from 2022 to 2026 will range from 916,000 to 949,000 tons per year.

During this period, production is projected to grow at an average of 0.65% per year.

Meanwhile, national cow's milk consumption from 2022 to 2026 is predicted to reach 989,000 to 1.07 million tons per year, exceeding production volume.

National milk consumption is also predicted to grow faster than production, with an average growth rate of 2.07% per year.

"The continuously increasing consumption of cow's milk in Indonesia has not been matched by the capacity of national dairy farmers to provide quality cow's milk," according to the Pusdatin Kementan report.

Pusdatin Kementan cites various factors hindering national milk production, including difficulties in finding green fodder for dairy cows, high prices of concentrate feed raw materials, declining dairy cow genetics, and suboptimal farm management.

Pusdatin Kementan also assesses that if no significant changes occur in national milk production, the deficit will persist.

"This milk shortage will open the floodgates for imports from producing countries such as America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe," the report states.
