East Java, Indonesia's Largest Fresh Milk Producer in 2020

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), national fresh milk production reached 948,000 tons in 2020. This figure shows a slight increase of 0.33% compared to the previous year, which reached 945,000 tons.

East Java was the largest producer of fresh milk, with production reaching 534,000 tons. Other significant producers include West Java, which produced 293,500 tons of fresh milk, followed by Central Java in third place with 99,920 tons. Yogyakarta produced 5,400 tons.

BPS notes that Indonesian milk consumption in 2020 was still around 16.27 kg per capita per year, lower than that of neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Indonesia's current milk demand is 4.3 million tons per year, while domestic production contributes only about 22.7% to meet national needs. The remaining fresh milk requirement is met through imports.

According to Makmun, Secretary of the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health, milk is a significant source of high-nutrient animal protein crucial for human needs and the development of a quality workforce for national development. Therefore, the government needs to ensure sustainable fresh milk production.

Government efforts to develop milk production from upstream to downstream include increasing the cattle population through the Sikomandan/Upsus SIWAB program. This also involves importing heifers and providing rearing support for calves, as well as offering investment incentives such as tax allowances.
