East Java is Indonesia's largest rice barn. Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2017, rice production in this province, whose capital city is Surabaya, reached 13.13 million tons, or 16.1 percent of national total production. According to the second forecast, national rice production reached 81.38 million tons, up 2.56 percent from the previous year's 79.35 million tons.
Meanwhile, the second largest rice barn nationally is West Java, with production of 13.52 million tons (15.38 percent) of national total production. Then, in third place is Central Java with production of 11.42 million tons (14 percent).
Java remains the national rice center, with production reaching 40.37 million tons, or almost half of national production. The other half is spread across other islands.
