The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimates that the harvested area of rice reached 10.61 million hectares in 2022. This is an increase of 194,710 hectares (1.87%) compared to the previous year's 10.41 million hectares.
With the increase in the harvested area, Indonesia's rice production is predicted to increase by 1.25 million tons (2.31%) to 55.67 million tons of dry milled rice (GKG) by the end of this year, compared to last year's 54.42 million tons of GKG.
East Java remains the province with the largest national rice harvest area. Rice production in this province is estimated to reach 1.7 million hectares by the end of this year. This is followed by Central Java with a harvested area of 1.7 million hectares, West Java 1.69 million hectares, South Sulawesi 1.04 million hectares, and Lampung 516,900 hectares.
Next, South Sumatra has a rice harvest area of 516,260 hectares, North Sumatra 423,520 hectares, Banten 338,450 hectares, West Sumatra 288,510 hectares, and Aceh 276,620 hectares.
Of the 34 provinces, 16 provinces are estimated to see an increase in their rice harvest area throughout 2022, while 18 provinces experienced a decrease in their rice harvest land area.
West Java recorded the largest increase in rice harvest area, reaching 81,190 hectares (5.06%), followed by South Sulawesi, which also increased by 56,950 hectares (5.78%). Meanwhile, East Java is the province that experienced the largest decrease in rice harvest area this year, at 42,720 hectares (2.44%), followed by Kalimantan, which also decreased by 28,780 hectares (11.32%).
