Coffee production from 2019 to 2021 showed an increasing trend. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the highest production of coffee from People's Plantations (PR) was in South Sumatra, reaching 211.68 tons, or 27.11 percent of national PR production.
In 2019, coffee production amounted to 752,510 tons, increasing to 762,380 tons in 2020, a rise of 1.31 percent. In 2021, coffee production increased to 786,190 tons, a 3.12 percent increase.
Coffee plantations in Indonesia, based on their management, are categorized into Large Plantations (PB) and People's Plantations (PR). Large Plantations consist of State-Owned Large Plantations (PBN) and Private Large Plantations (PBS).
In 2021, the highest PB coffee production was in East Java Province, reaching 4.23 tons, or 79.52 percent of the total PB coffee production in Indonesia.
Over the past three years, the land area dedicated to coffee in large plantations has shown a declining trend. One of the causes is land conversion. The area of state-owned plantations decreased by 4.57 percent in 2020 and 3.80 percent in 2021. Similarly, the land area of private companies also decreased, with a 3.03 percent decrease in 2020 and a 10.15 percent decrease in 2021.
Unlike the land area of PB plantations, the land area of PR plantations in Indonesia has increased, rising by 6,050 hectares (0.49 percent) in 2020 and by 30,600 hectares (2.49 percent) in 2021 compared to the previous year.
