Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height Approximately 600 Meters

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 6:40 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This marks the third eruption in the past week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash plume reached a height of 600 meters above the peak, or 4,276 meters above sea level.

The ash plume was observed to be white to gray in color with moderate intensity heading north. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations from 00:00 to 06:00 AM WIB on May 7, 2024, showed 6 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-22 millimeters and durations of 50-188 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 10 millimeters and a duration of 50 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-22 millimeters and durations of 212-529 seconds.

The PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, within a 13-kilometer radius of the peak (eruption center). Outside this radius, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks (river margins) along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 641 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 216 recorded events.
